Purpose: Communication ability is one of the important competencies of professional nurses. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between empathy, ego-resilience and communication ability among nursing students, as well as to identify the factors associated with nursing students¡¯communication ability.
Methods: The participants in this study were 158 nursing students attending 7 university, from 2 regions in South Korea. A web-based survey was conducted with standardized e-questionnaire generated using the Google form. The web-link was distributed to third-and fourth-year nursing students through a social networking service to obtain data on their level of empathy, ego-resilience and communication ability. Collected data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 26.0 using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression.
Results: The mean scores of empathy, ego-resilience, and communication ability were 3.47¡¾0.39, 2.95¡¾0.52 and 3.71¡¾0.56, respectively. Communication ability was positively correlated with empathy (r=.50, p<.001) and ego-resilience (r=.44, p<.001). The stepwise multiple regression indicated that empathy (?=.40, p<.001), personality type (extrovert) (?=.24, p<.001), and ego-resilience (?=.23, p=.001) predicted 40.0% of variance in communication ability (F=18.01, p<.001).
Conclusion: Itis necessary to develop nursing education strategies to reflect factors associated with communication ability in order to strengthen this ability among nursing students.
